From Gary Bernstein: "Wilhelmina founded the esteemed Wilhelmina Model Agency, and is the most famous professional model of all time with a record number of Vogue covers. Wilhelmina and Bruce Cooper (Willie's husband) were dear friends for many years. In 1974 Willie helped me get my start in NYC. Short version of story (long version in my new book): In mid-1974 I was lucky enough to secure an interview with the Creative Director of BBDO; taking my portfolio of (extremely heavy) mounted photographs on an Amtrak from D.C. to NYC. Controlling a creative empire in The Big Apple, he asked me to leave my portfolio with him. A few days later--when I was back in Washington, D.C.--I got a call from 2 artist's agents and Wilhelmina herself ( couldn't believe it). "Gary," said the beautiful, sweet 5'-11" Willie "...I understand you're moving here and that you could use some images of New York City models in your portfolio." "Yes, that would be just great, but I don't have a studio yet," I respond...
