Description
From Gary Bernstein: "Wilhelmina founded the esteemed Wilhelmina Model Agency, and is the most famous professional model of all time with a record number of Vogue covers. Wilhelmina and Bruce Cooper (Willie's husband) were dear friends for many years. In 1974 Willie helped me get my start in NYC. Short version of story (long version in my new book): In mid-1974 I was lucky enough to secure an interview with the Creative Director of BBDO; taking my portfolio of (extremely heavy) mounted photographs on an Amtrak from D.C. to NYC. Controlling a creative empire in The Big Apple, he asked me to leave my portfolio with him. A few days later--when I was back in Washington, D.C.--I got a call from 2 artist's agents and Wilhelmina herself ( couldn't believe it). "Gary," said the beautiful, sweet 5'-11" Willie "...I understand you're moving here and that you could use some images of New York City models in your portfolio." "Yes, that would be just great, but I don't have a studio yet," I responded. "You can shoot at my studio," said the kind angel. And I did shoot at her studio, the very next week; as an amazing collection of New York City Wilhelmina modeling talent paraded in front of my lens. Willie and I worked on countless projects which allowed me to continue to photograph the lady herself (and her great family as well). The original for this image was made in my Park Avenue South studio as part of a book shoot for Willie which I recently turned into a Derivative for this collection."
