From Gary Bernstein: “When I was about 20, I dropped out of the University of Florence (Italy) camera in hand hoping to “find” Sophia Loren ;). Of course, every man in the world was hoping to find Sophia Loren ;). I was introduced to the legendary actress and great beauty many years later by acclaimed fashion designer Nolan Miller. I was driving on Sunset when my car phone rang and Nolan said “Gary, there’s a lady here you might want to talk to,” and he put Sophia on the phone who was at his studio for a fitting. A day later we shot our first session together in my Culver City studio. This particular photograph was made on the street in front of the Hotel Des Bergues in Geneva, Switzerland. Within 2 minutes there was a huge crowd of her ardent fans on the street shouting "Sophia! Sophia!""
